Donegal man jailed for sexually abusing younger sister

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A 41-year-old man has been jailed for three years for sexually assaulting his younger sister at their family home in Co Donegal between 2003 and 2005. She was aged between 10 and 13 at the time, and he was aged between 19 and 21. He cannot be named to protect her anonymity.

He pleaded guilty in October to four sample counts of sexual assault. A more serious charge was to be withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecutions. The proceedings were reported on 17 December 2025.

The Central Criminal Court heard that the man initially stood trial in 2024, when his sister gave evidence and was cross-examined. That trial collapsed for legal reasons, and other trial dates could not go ahead.

Passing sentence, Ms Justice Karen O'Connor described the offending as premeditated and planned. She identified the breach of trust, age disparity and impact on the victim as aggravating factors. Having considered his circumstances and mitigation, she imposed a three-year sentence backdated to when he went into custody.

The judge said the man was entitled to challenge the evidence on the more serious charge, but that guilty pleas to the sexual assault charges could have been entered at any stage. She said there had been no acknowledgement of wrongdoing or expression of remorse until October, while noting that he would receive credit for his guilty pleas.

The court heard that the abuse occurred on occasions when their parents may have been out or watching television, and stopped when the man began dating. In a victim impact statement, the woman described lasting harm and fractured relationships. The man had no previous convictions.
