Donegal-based retired teacher extradited over indecent assault

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A 77-year-old Donegal-based retired teacher was ordered extradited from the High Court on 26 July 2017 to face an alleged indecent assault on a student. The alleged offence concerned a ten-year-old student who was alone with him in a UK school staff room in June or July 1978.

The UK citizen cannot be identified for legal reasons. The court heard that authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant, while his objections included the delay and earlier decisions not to prosecute. Justice Aileen Donnelly rejected those objections and directed that he be surrendered to the UK, with more restrictive bail conditions pending surrender.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
