David Mulvey was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and disqualified from driving for four years by Judge Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 25 June 2018.

Mulvey pleaded guilty to violent disorder, dangerous driving and endangerment. He had 27 previous convictions.

The incident began at the Cardiff Inn in Finglas. Chris Duggan and other men had entered the pub with a baseball bat to confront a group Mulvey had been drinking with. After the groups squared up, Duggan tried to leave but tripped over a stool; Mulvey’s group then launched a sustained attack on him.

Detective Sergeant Shane McCarthy said Mulvey attempted to hit Duggan with a bar chair and stamp on him. He said CCTV showed Mulvey driving onto the footpath towards Duggan and another man, then turning and driving onto the footpath again, narrowly missing them.

McCarthy agreed with defence counsel Michael Hourigan that CCTV did not show Mulvey making contact when he tried to kick and stamp on Duggan. He accepted that Mulvey left the pub while the assault continued. Hourigan said Mulvey accepted his response was disproportionate and that the consequences could have been more grave.

Judge Nolan said the trouble had been brought to Mulvey’s door while he was sitting in the pub minding his own business. The judge also described his attempt to strike people with his car as vicious.

Duggan had also pleaded guilty to violent disorder. In April 2018, Judge Cormac Quinn sentenced him to two years, with the final 15 months suspended.
