This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Daniel Sheehan was sentenced at the Special Criminal Court on 10 June 2024 to three years’ imprisonment, with the final 18 months suspended for two years, for possessing 263 rounds of ammunition in suspicious circumstances. Mr Justice Michael MacGrath ordered him to have no contact with people of “militant or paramilitaries disposition”.

Sheehan pleaded guilty to the ammunition charge. The proceedings were reported on 13 November 2023. He was charged with having the rounds at Churchfield Avenue, Cork, on 3 June 2022 in circumstances giving rise to a reasonable inference that he did not have them for a lawful purpose.

The judge said gardaí found the ammunition in a bag in a shed at Sheehan’s home and that Sheehan admitted possessing it at the scene. Sheehan said he had amassed it from nights out shooting with another man and from his interest in war memorabilia.

Sheehan had also been charged with membership of an illegal organisation, the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, on 3 June 2022. The State later dropped that charge; Maddie Grant BL, for the Director of Public Prosecutions, said the guilty plea to the ammunition charge would “meet the case”.
