Barry Watters has sentence cut for child pornography
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Barry Watters was resentenced to five years and eight months, with the final 18 months suspended, by the Court of Appeal on 25 June 2019 for public indecency and child pornography offences. The offences occurred in Dublin, including his exposure of himself to children on their way to school and possession of child pornography at Middle Abbey Street.
The court reduced the sentence imposed in December 2018, finding that maximum sentences for both offences had been inappropriate. It imposed 20 months for public indecency and treated four years as the appropriate starting point for possession of child pornography, taking account of his previous convictions.
The suspended portion was subject to 11 conditions, including probation supervision, participation in a sex-offender programme, no contact with young children and restrictions on internet use. Breaching those conditions could require Watters to serve additional prison time.
