Alan Freeman’s theft conviction appeal dismissed

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Alan Freeman’s appeal against his theft conviction and sentence was dismissed in part by the Court of Appeal on 26 June 2015. The court upheld the conviction but suspended the final two years of his 13-year sentence, leaving five years to run consecutively to six years.

The appeal argued that contact between Freeman and a senior garda during his trial had undermined the guilty plea. The court found that Freeman had entered the plea with legal representation and that the trial judge was entitled to conclude the contact concerned matters unconnected with the trial.

The suspension was conditional on Freeman entering a €100 bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for two years after release.
