Aaron Brady pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the capital murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, who was a member of An Garda Síochána on active duty. He also pleaded not guilty to robbing approximately €7,000 in cash and assorted cheques from Pat Bellew. Both charges related to 25 January 2013 at Lordship Credit Union, Bellurgan, Co Louth.

The proceedings were reported on 27 January 2020. A 15-person jury had been sworn in, and the trial was due to open on Tuesday.

Mr Justice Michael White said the trial was expected to be lengthy and was estimated to finish on 28 May. He explained that only 12 jurors would take part in the final deliberations; the extra jurors were there in case anyone had to drop out.

The judge warned jurors not to look on social media or research anything on the internet relating to the trial, as they were to pay attention only to the evidence in court.
