The Labour Court recommended that Dublin Port Company and 160 Various Grades agree the company's 2003 alcohol and substance-abuse policy should continue to apply to staff hired before 1 January 2013. The recommendation was signed on 24 September 2018. The company sought random intoxicant testing, citing safety at the port; the unions said existing testing for cause was sufficient. The Court found the employer had not shown random testing was necessary and said the policy could affect employees' rights.
