The Labour Court rejected Services Industrial Professional Technical Union claims for changes to sick pay, time off and shop-steward representation in a recommendation dated 20 September 2010. The union sought improved sick-pay benefits, a return to a scheme allowing workers to bank extra hours, and union-official representation for shop stewards at every stage of disciplinary and grievance procedures. Covidien Ireland Limited Tullamore said its sick-pay scheme had been agreed with the union in 2006 and defended the time-off and representation arrangements. The Court said there was no reason to change the agreed sick-pay scheme. It considered the replacement time-off system reasonable and the company’s position on representation fair and reasonable, and did not recommend either change.
