Labour Court recommends compensation for St James’s Hospital workers after fire-alarm work transfer

The Labour Court recommended compensation for workers at St James’s Hospital after fire-alarm duties were transferred from hospital electricians to security personnel who were not direct hospital employees. The recommendation was signed on 16 September 2010. The Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union said the change was imposed unilaterally and that qualified electricians should continue doing the work. The hospital said the tasks did not require qualified electricians and that it had consulted them. The Court recommended compensation equal to 1.5 times the annual loss of earnings caused by the transfer. It said earnings from associated call-out duties in 2009 should be used to calculate the annual loss.
