The Labour Court recommended that Smithkline Beecham (Cork) Limited Trading As Glaxosmithkline pay €45,000 to each employee covered by its holiday-cover agreement as it ended. The recommendation was signed on 15 March 2010. It proposed three instalments: €20,000, €15,000 and €10,000 on the specified dates. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the long-standing agreement increased workers’ earnings and could not be withdrawn without compensation. The company said the overtime was no longer needed and its financial position had deteriorated. The Court said the agreement could be ended, but substantial compensation was warranted given its duration and monetary value.
