The Labour Court recommended changes to arrangements for theatre nurses at Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise. It recommended bringing sleep-time arrangements for 13 nurses into line with national arrangements and extending the rostered day duty shift to 8pm, when on-call would begin. The recommendation was signed on 21 July 2009. The Irish Nurses Organisation said the enhanced sleep-time arrangement had become established practice for 13 nurses. HSE Dublin Mid Leinster had argued it should have ended when a third nurse was appointed and that the day shift should extend to 9pm. The Court recommended implementing management’s sleep-time proposal and setting the shift and on-call start at 8pm.
