Labour Court recommends next training place for student air traffic controller

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The Labour Court recommended that an Irish Aviation Authority student air traffic controller be allowed into the next available training programme without a selection process. Its recommendation, dated 9 October 2008, followed his dismissal from the programme after he failed two of three exams. The Authority said the exams tested required safety standards. The Court did not recommend allowing him to resit the failed exams, but recommended that he be allowed to progress through the next programme normally. It accepted the Authority’s appeal process and did not recommend extending the Continuity of Service Agreement grievance procedure to student controllers. It recommended that they be allowed union representation at appeal hearings when requested.
