Labour Court recommends compensation for HSE South East ambulance staff

The Labour Court recommended compensation equal to twice the annual loss of the on-call allowance for ambulance personnel affected by its elimination in the South East. The recommendation was dated 14 November 2005. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the allowance formed part of members' normal remuneration and that losing it would affect their pensions. HSE South East said 24-hour rosters replaced an on-call system regarded as a health and safety issue. The Court noted the allowance was pensionable and recommended addressing the resulting long-term loss in superannuation entitlements. It did not recommend compensation for lost on-call overtime, noting that overtime would continue.
