The Labour Court recommended that Quantum Personal Care Ltd apply a 4.5% pay increase from 1 July 2004 for 12 months, followed by a 2.5% increase from 1 July 2005 for six months. The recommendation was signed on 1 November 2004. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought the Sustaining Progress increases for its 13 general operative members after a pay freeze. Quantum said difficult trading conditions had led to the freeze and that most of its workforce had accepted its 4.5% offer. The Court said it was not convinced the company’s inability-to-pay position was fully valid and recommended that the increases take effect on the proposed dates.
