The Labour Court recommended phased pay increases for Becton Dickinson workers in a pay dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The union had sought an 18% rise, while management said any increase needed to be matched by cost savings. In a recommendation dated 22 September 2004, the Court proposed increases of 5% from 1 June 2004, 4% from 1 June 2005 and 5% from 1 October 2006, on condition that the union accept the company’s proposed productivity measures.
