The Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann employees accept the company’s offer of a €5 a day meal and lodging allowance, and that the original implementation date for back payments remain in place. The recommendation was dated 31 May 2004. The unions—ICTU Group, Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, National Bus and Rail Union, Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union, and Transport Salaried Staffs' Association—had sought €10 a day. They accepted that €5 was the maximum tax-free allowance, but argued the proposed increase from €4.93 was only €0.07 a day and that some workers could lose eligibility. Iarnrod Eireann said it was changing the phasing to reduce costs.
