In 2004, the Labour Court recommended that County Dublin VEC and the Department of Education and Science pay a part-time teacher five weeks' pay per year of service, in addition to statutory redundancy entitlements, after Shanganagh Castle prison closed. The recommendation was signed on 16 March. The Teachers' Union Of Ireland sought at least six weeks' pay per year plus statutory entitlements, citing the teacher's service and difficulty finding comparable work. The employers said their offer of four weeks' pay per year, inclusive of statutory entitlements, was fair. The Court said its recommendation took account of the particular circumstances.
