In 2002, the Labour Court recommended that Dublin City University and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union discuss changes to the university’s disciplinary statute and protect union members’ representation rights. The recommendation was dated 6 December 2002. The union said the university had adopted the statute without agreement and that a 1985 agreement should guide employment relations. The university said the Universities Act 1997 required a statute covering suspension and dismissal procedures. The Court accepted that the 1985 agreement did not meet the university’s requirements, while saying representation rights had to be protected. It recommended modifications and facilitated discussions, to be completed within two months.
