The Labour Court did not recommend that Smurfit Corrugated Cases extend an enhanced redundancy package to additional workers. Its recommendation was signed on 15 June 2000. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought the enhanced package for five workers and access to it for about 35 more at the company’s Walkinstown plant. The Court found the package for 12 employees had been tailored to their circumstances and that the company learned of wider interest only after that package was agreed. The company had offered to divide the available funds among all applicants, but the Court did not recommend concession of the union’s claims.
