The Labour Court recommended that two long-serving Galway City Fire Service workers retire at 60, resolving a dispute over whether their retirement age was 55 or 65. The recommendation was dated 21 October 1999. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the workers, appointed as sub officers in 1985, had not been told that the appointments changed their retirement age. Galway County Council said they had been given application information stating the 55-year limit. The Court described the circumstances as unique and recommended retirement at 60 for the two workers.
