In 1999, the Labour Court upheld Stena Line’s interpretation of its agreements on public-holiday pay for 32 general operatives at its Dun Laoghaire ferry terminal. The recommendation was dated 23 June 1999. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that staff made permanent after May 1993 had not known holiday pay was included in basic salary, and sought the same entitlements as other company groups. Stena Line said the agreements were freely negotiated and that holiday pay had been consolidated into basic salary. The Court upheld the company’s interpretation for pre- and post-1993 employees, and recommended that Stena Line give employees written information on salary and holiday arrangements when appointed.
