In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Fan's Flowers pay Teresa Clerkin £500 in compensation after finding the manner of her dismissal unfair. The recommendation was dated 24 September 1998. Clerkin worked as a florist from the company’s opening on 6 April 1998 until her dismissal on 6 May. The company said its first-month operating loss exceeded £3,000 and that all wages and leave entitlements had been paid. The Court said the business’s start-up difficulties did not excuse failing to tell Clerkin about her dismissal before the shop closed or later refusing her entry to collect her belongings, although the shop remained open. The employer sent written background but did not attend the hearing.
