In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Mid-Western Health Board pay a former worker at the Hospital of the Assumption, Thurles, the appropriate boilerman allowance for duties performed from 1987 until 1989. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said he had performed boilerman duties and sought the higher rate. The Board said he had been employed as an attendant and that the post was being phased out as boilers were automated. The Court noted that he had acted as boilerman without payment during that period. The recommendation was dated 1 May 1998.
