In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Liebherr Container Cranes Limited continue its existing hours arrangement for a further 12 months while the parties reviewed its impact and considered an alternative. The company sought to replace fixed days off and early plant closures under a 1990 agreement with one hour off each week, citing production and service pressures. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union opposed changing the established arrangement. The Court investigated the dispute in Killarney on 31 March 1998 and signed its recommendation on 20 April 1998.
