The Labour Court recommended that Irish Tar And Bitumen Supplies Limited and the Marine, Port and General Workers’ Union accept an amended pay structure, cap additional unpaid hours at 325 a year and jointly review the arrangements annually for three years. The recommendation was dated 9 March 1998. The dispute concerned restructuring that included changes to overtime, allowances and bonus payments. The union sought guaranteed weekly earnings for shift staff, defined hours and voluntary redundancy or early retirement. The company said its proposals could maintain employment, link earnings to output and reduce working hours.
