In 1997, the Labour Court recommended reinstating a worker dismissed by the Law Society Of Ireland, treating the period from her dismissal until acceptance of the recommendation as suspension. The recommendation, signed on 16 June 1997, made reinstatement conditional on her agreeing to serve the Young Members' Committee until the end of September.
The dispute followed a strike that began on 25 May after a union ballot. The Society said committee secretary duties were covered by the worker’s contract; Mandate disputed that they were specified duties. The Court noted that the worker apologised to the Director General and he accepted her apology.
The Court also recommended agreeing a grievance scheme within one month and canteen staff rates within six weeks. It recommended applying agreed pay scales to new clerical recruits from the week ending 1 June 1997. The 2.5% productivity claim was to be revisited once new flexibility arrangements were accepted and working.
