In 1997, the Labour Court did not recommend concession of The Dublin Printing Group Of Unions (Dpgu)'s claim to include three weeks' additional bank-holiday pay in pension calculations for Irish Times production staff. The recommendation was dated 25 April 1997. The claim concerned about 280 workers. The DPGU argued that staff had to be available for bank-holiday work, while Irish Times argued the payment was overtime in nature and excluded from pensionable salary. The Court found that public-holiday payments had traditionally been excluded from pension calculations and that the claim was cost-increasing and contrary to the Programme for Competitiveness and Work and Partnership 2000.
