Labour Court recommends against Dawn Meats six-hour pay claim after ammonia leak

In 1996, the Labour Court did not recommend concession of the Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union's claim for six hours' pay after workers left Dawn Meats Limited's Grannagh plant following an ammonia leak. The recommendation was signed on 23 December. The workers had already received two hours' pay. The company said it had taken appropriate steps to deal with the leak and considered the plant safe at 9am. The union argued that workers had not received enough information about ammonia levels and that a full risk assessment should have been carried out.
