In 1996, the Labour Court recommended that Alucolor Limited accept The Graphical, Paper And Media Union's offer of short-time or rotational work for two foil-stamping trainees. The recommendation was signed on 19 December 1996. Alucolor Limited said the department was under-utilised after an expected contract did not materialise and that it could not find alternative work. The union said the six workers were gainfully employed and argued the trainees should be considered for apprenticeship vacancies. The Court said a redundancy situation existed. It recommended the short-time or rotational arrangement so the trainees could complete their two-year training periods, after which they were to accept redundancy.
