Labour Court finds Gernord agreement allows rotating three-shift system

In 1996, the Labour Court found that Gernord Limited’s agreement with the Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union made employees liable for deployment on a rotating three-shift system. The recommendation was signed on 6 December 1996. The union opposed rotating shifts and favoured a permanent night shift staffed by new employees. The Court said Gernord should make every effort to minimise domestic or social disadvantages for long-serving employees and noted the company was prepared to address difficulties in individual cases.
