The Labour Court recommended that Famac International Ltd give the Marine Port And General Workers' Union the right to represent its members in the company, in a recommendation dated 16 May 1996. The dispute concerned the union’s efforts to represent about 12 drivers, sorters and warehouse workers. A ballot among those workers was tied, with six favouring union representation and six an internal works committee. The company said only six of 28 staff balloted wanted union representation and favoured the committee.
