The Labour Court recommended that The Hospitaller Order Of St. John Of God protect the nursing rate of pay for three nurses at St. Augustine’s School, Blackrock, in a recommendation dated 9 May 1996. The dispute arose from a proposal to replace the nurses with care staff working sleep-over shifts; the nurses had been offered redeployment elsewhere. The Court recommended that the nurses remain on the nursing rate while undertaking care-staff duties, and that the parties further discuss redeployment. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had opposed replacing the nurses, citing students’ care needs and the nurses’ skills and relationships with them.
