In 1996, the Labour Court recommended a revised cost-cutting package for Dublin Drug Company Limited and Manufacturing Science Finance. The dispute concerned proposals affecting 44 workers in warehouse, transport and clerical or administration roles. The company said cost changes were needed to stay competitive; the union opposed wage cuts. The company also said it reduced management salaries by 10% in January 1996. The Court recommended abolishing the clothing allowance and complimentary canteen food, and accepting Saturday opening. Warehouse proposals were to be accepted subject to compensation equal to 12 months of shift or bonus pay. It did not recommend reducing drivers' basic pay, but recommended reducing the lunch allowance and accident-free driving scheme. Administrative staff were to be compensated for one year's loss caused by a half-hour reduction in the working day. It also recommended a basis for sharing future profit growth with employees.
