In 1995, the Labour Court could not recommend the claim as made by the Amalgamated Transport General Workers' Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union for laid-off workers at Delphi Packard Electric Systems. It recommended that their re-employment, continued lay-off or redundancy be handled consistently with future workforce measures once the plant’s workload was known. The recommendation was signed on 2 May 1995. The dispute followed the loss of a contract in May 1994, which led to 190 lay-offs. By January 1995, 42 workers remained laid off and 15 had been made redundant since May 1994. The Court said the earlier commitments had been made in expectation of a contract that was lost and that it lacked specific information about future workload.
