In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that Howmedica International introduce bar coding and assess its effects over 12 months, after the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought extra pay for 274 general operatives. The company was represented by the Irish Business and Employers Confederation. The union claimed a £1,000 net lead-in payment and a £14.25 weekly increase. Howmedica said the system would improve accuracy and standards, while the Court said its effect on labour and cost savings was not yet known. The recommendation, signed on 1 March 1995, said the parties should assess the system's cost benefit and whether its results fell within their agreements. The Court also called for transparency and employee involvement in managing changes.
