In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann and Manufacturing, Science, Finance take an engineers' negotiating-rights dispute to their joint working party. The recommendation was signed on 5 January 1995. Manufacturing, Science, Finance sought negotiating rights for about 60 of the company's 76 engineers. Iarnrod Eireann opposed giving rights to another union, citing existing representation arrangements and industrial-relations problems. The Court described the matter as a sensitive choice-of-representation issue and noted that a joint company-union working party was operating successfully. It recommended that the group seek an in-house agreement and return the matter to the Court if no satisfactory solution was reached.
