The Labour Court rejected the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim for one hour off each week for about 2,000 Eastern Health Board workers to cash their pay cheques. Its recommendation was signed on 30 September 1994. The union said night-shift workers struggled to cash cheques and some had to wait after shifts or use days off. The Board said it was preparing to introduce a paypath system and argued that an hour off would affect staffing and services. The Court said cheques should be available before Thursday finishing time and workers should not have to use rest periods to collect wages, but did not recommend the requested hour off.
