In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept Smurfit Cartons Limited's proposal for a 7.30 a.m. start, with talks to resolve individual difficulties. It found no grounds to recommend the union's claims for three work allowances. The recommendation was signed on 9 March 1994. The union sought allowances for work involving holograms, computerised labelling and a banding machine. It said workers' skills and responsibilities had increased; the company argued that new methods had made the jobs easier.
