In 1993, the Labour Court recommended local consultation arrangements for Sunday rostering disputes at Irish Rail, after a worker at the Athlone depot was disciplined for refusing Sunday overtime. The Court said customer and business needs should take priority when staff were rostered, while supporting safeguards against abuse. It also recommended deleting the disciplinary procedure reference from the worker's record. The recommendation named the National Bus and Rail Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union as the unions in the dispute. It was signed on 4 November 1993.
