The Labour Court recommended that Irish Press PLC. and the Amalgamated Electrical And Engineering Union discuss a dispute over maintenance duties and Collect-printing work, while the £65 weekly interim payment was reduced by £10 every four weeks pending those talks. The Court’s recommendation, dated 30 July 1993, followed disagreement over whether the payment should continue after maintenance assistants were appointed. The union said extra duties, including Collect-printing and work by fitters without assistants, justified keeping it. The company argued that the payment should end and that the work could be done during normal hours. The Court asked the parties to discuss the maintenance-assistant agreement, Collect-printing and any other issues raised by either side. If they could not agree, it said it would review the negotiations and might issue a further recommendation.
