The Labour Court recommended that Goldenvale PLC. maintain a weighbridge operator’s earnings at £25,000 a year in a new role after automation removed his former position. The recommendation was dated 21 July 1993. The worker had been with the company for 25 years. Goldenvale and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agreed a new position to avoid redundancy but could not agree on his salary. The union sought a higher rate, while the company said earlier earnings had been boosted by exceptional overtime and offered a package expected to yield about £23,500 a year. Taking account of the worker’s past earnings, the Court recommended maintaining his annual earnings at £25,000. It said the rate should increase under negotiated terms and remain personal to him.
