In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Tinsley Wire (Ireland) Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union negotiate a new agreement on wages during lay-off. The dispute followed a one-off agreement to make up workers’ full net wages for a proposed week of lay-off, subject to a joint referral. The union said the former Unidare arrangement remained in force; the company said separate businesses had to negotiate according to their circumstances and ability to pay. The Court recommended that unresolved negotiations go to the Labour Relations Commission and, if necessary, back to the Court.
