In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Dublin Corporation and two unions discuss lump-sum compensation for workers who would lose earnings when the corporation ended its practice of replacing absent supervisors with fitters. The recommendation was dated 7 May 1993. The Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union and Technical Engineering Electrical Union said ending the arrangement would affect workers’ earnings and promotion opportunities. They proposed a 7.50% chargehand differential for fitters in return for greater flexibility and multi-skilling. The Court found the replacement practice no longer necessary and wasteful, and said the unions’ proposal was unaffordable at the time.
