In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that Munekata Plastronix Limited pay nine workers a lump sum equivalent to 5% of their current basic rate, covering the period from six months after appointment until a pay review was implemented. The recommendation was signed on 13 February 1992. The dispute followed the workers’ move from production jobs into administration positions between December 1989 and March 1990, after which they were confirmed in their roles without a salary review. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that the workers’ pay did not reflect their new work, while the company cited declining business and losses. The Court said staff had expected a review, though it need not necessarily yield a pay increase, and that the company was obliged to carry it out. The recommendation left severance pay for workers who took voluntary redundancy unchanged.
