The Labour Court recommended that Howmedica International Inc. pay £6,000 in severance to a worker whose dismissal the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union challenged. The recommendation was dated 11 June 1991. The Court did not recommend reinstatement, saying the worker’s behaviour over a long period had put his employment in jeopardy and mutual trust no longer existed. The company said he had been dismissed after unauthorised absence, late medical certificates and attempts to mislead its investigation. The union argued that the dismissal was unfair and arbitrary and that disciplinary procedures had not been followed.
