Labour Court rejects unions’ claim for Cadbury stoppage compensation

In 1991, the Labour Court found no grounds to concede a claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union for lost earnings after a work stoppage at Cadbury (Ireland) Limited. Its recommendation was dated 13 March. The stoppage followed a dispute over a night-shift worker who could not remove a ring when management instructed him to do so for hygiene reasons. He was kept off the shop floor, and an unofficial stoppage followed. The unions said the company had changed its approach to rings and had refused to use agreed procedures. The company said jewellery was prohibited under hygiene rules and argued that the worker remained on the clock.
