In 1991, the Labour Court recommended against the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union's claim to stop two proposed redundancies at The Rehabilitation Institute's Sligo Centre. The recommendation was signed on 26 February 1991. The union argued there was sufficient work in Sligo for both workers and sought withdrawal of the redundancy notices. The Institute said fitting and turning work had declined and that the merger of its Sligo and Galway regional offices had removed the need for the posts. The Court said the Institute's position was not unreasonable, citing trainee numbers, national staffing ratios and the office merger.
