Labour Court recommends week’s leave for Ormond Printing workers after short notice

By Cathal Brosnan

Labour Court ·

In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that the week beginning 5 February be treated as leave for workers in Ormond Printing Company Limited’s litho-printing department. The recommendation was dated 20 June 1990. National Graphical Association said the company gave only four days’ notice of the holiday closure, contrary to agreements, and sought a week’s holiday for 19 workers who had reported for work. The company said a downturn had left it without work and that most unions had agreed to the closure. The Court recognised the short-notice circumstances but said it was unfortunate the leave agreements had not been followed in full. It recommended treating the week as leave and paying workers who worked at the company’s request in the normal way.
