In 1990, the Labour Court found no grounds to concede the Rail Operative Trade Union Group's claim for lost earnings for three signalmen over Christmas 1988. The recommendation was signed on 30 April 1990. The union argued that the signalmen should have been paid for the holiday period even though Irish Rail did not require them to work. Irish Rail said they received pay and shift premiums for the public holidays and were treated like other workers who were not required to work.
